A public domain text and a public domain reading of Ulysses are available, respectively, at Project Gutenberg (www.gutenberg.org) and Librivox (www.librivox.org )
The Importance of the Occasion
This will be the 104th anniversary of Bloomsday (the day on which the novel took place), and is particularly auspicious because it is part of a four year cycle like the presidential elections, and the Olympics (though certainly of far greater significance).
WARNING
For those not yet familiar with James Joyce who do not like to laugh, please stay away from Ulysses – if it is not the world’s greatest comic novel, it will probably do until the real one comes along.
How Ulysses is organized
As Joyce enthusiasts are well aware, the author decided not to include chapter titles in the printed editions of the novel. Although, the book roughly follows the course of Homer’s Odyssey, the chapter headings are never included in any printed edition (of which there are a number with competing claims of authenticity and accuracy). For some navigation through Ulysses is more like a trip through a labyrinth than a Mediterranean voyage or a tour of Dublin.
We, therefore, disclose that the chapters of Ulysses are as follows (page references to Modern Library edition):
Episode One: “Telemachus”, starting “Stately, plump Buck Mulligan…”(page 2)
Episode Two: “Nestor”, starting ”You, Cochrane, what city sent for him?…” (page 24)
Episode Three: “Proteus”, starting, “Ineluctable modality of the visible:…” (page 37)
Episode Four: “Calypso”, starting, “Mr. Leopold Bloom ate with relish…” (page 55)
Episode Five: “The Lotus Eaters”, starting, “By lorries along Sir John Rogerson's quay…” (page 71)
Episode Six: “Hades”, starting, “Martin Cunningham, first, pokes…” (page 87 )
Episode Seven: “Aeolus”, starting, “IN THE HEART OF THE HIBERNIAN METROPOLIS…” (page 116)
Episode Eight: “Lestrygonians”, starting, “Pineapple rock, lemon platt…” (page 151)
Episode Nine: “Scylla and Charybdis”, starting, “ Urbane, to comfort them,…” (page 184)
Episode Ten: “The Wandering Rocks”, starting, “The superior, very reverend…” (page 219)
Episode Eleven: “Sirens”, starting, “Bronze, by gold heard…” (page 256)
Episode Twelve: “Cyclops”, starting, “I was just passing the time of day…” (page 292)
Episode Thirteen: “Nausicaa”, starting, “The summer evening had begun to fold…” (page 346)
Episode Fourteen: “Oxen of the Sun”, starting, “Deshil holles earmus…”(page 383)
Episode Fifteen: “Circe”, starting, “The Mabbot Street entrance…” (page 429)
Episode Sixteen: “Eumaeus”, starting, “Preparatory to anything else…” (page 612)
Episode Seventeen: “Ithaca”, starting, “What parallel courses did…” (page 666)
Episode Eighteen: “Penelope”, starting, “Yes because he never did like that before…” (page 738)
